A ripping yarn from High Victorian author GA Henty, who had the odd adventure himself. Our 15 year old hero sails to the Spanish Main with Francis Drake. Early on, Henty is put to some trouble to justify what is essentially a piratical voyage, captained by an ex-slaver. He does so with a nice dash of xenophobia for the cruel and arrogant Dons, and an apeal to the superior virtues of the English sailor, the natural master race. Our hero demonstrates these virtues by being keen as mustard at his nautical and military training, and by his physical courage. He is especially distinguished at saving life in the water. The book is probably written for teenage boys, and quite simplistic in outlook. The High Victorian style entails very long sentences, with multiple subclauses. However, learning how to read and control such sentences is good grammatical training for young people, even if they finally adopt a more modern style. Overall, a good page-turning tale, with traditional English virtues and vices.Read full review
