This is the film to see, the best of all made before & since. The best thing out of the Soviet Union deservedly winning an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1968 with Natalie Wood translating for Ludmilla Savelyeva. The music is great in parts, acquired taste in others with typical Russian music written by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov- unknown. The Director/actor Bondarchuk also the force behind 'Waterloo', an excellent sequel. I tried to get into the book, couldn't get started but after viewing this film I picked up the Penguin & read it from front to back easy as you like. This film is one of the classics of all time to be enjoyed.
