I love this album it has real touches of humourous genius that Zevon was famous for-or should have been! 'The hula hula boys' is fabulous song about a holiday affair, that could so easily have been a great pop hit if it hadnt been too intelligent and black humoured for that.. All in all a great collection of songs about the witty, dark, diverse subjects mr. Zevon loved. ' I saw her leave the luau With the one who parked the cars And the fat one from the swimming pool They were swaying arm in arm I could hear the ukuleles playing Down by the sea She's gone with the hula hula boys She don't care about me' And I especially like the chorus, which is in the Hawaiian language 'The envoy' is pretty good, a proper rock song really, I love 'Jesus mentioned' for its soulfulness 'he went walking on the water..with his pills' about Elvis again, like another brilliant song of his- 'porcelain monkey',on the album 'Life'll kill ya' 'Looking for the next best thing' has a clever double meaning.'Charlies medicine' is a great epitath for a drug dealer, 'Ain't that pretty at all' still has me in hysterics (in a really really good way!) Plus 'never to late for love' is yet another example of Warrens scope, as a gorgeous ballad. The outtakes are great (though wild thing, done with a shed load of irony, still makes me cringe) but generally this album has not dated at bit,and the 07 version is worth buying for the bonuses, if you're a zevon fan, which you will be!Read full review
