This is their 3rd album by the original Deep Purple - with Rod Evans on vocals and Nicky Simper on bass. I feel this album defines the band's direction into rock music. Just through listening to "Chasing Shadows", "Emmaretta" and "Why Didn't Rosemary", you can tell that some amazing album namely 'In Rock' was to follow! The songs on this album are just brilliant - this is by far the best album of the original DP. There are so many new ideas and it's very creative - backwards drumming by Paicey, some really cool riffs, an orchestral arrangement in 'April' and Ritchie's use of wah-wah pedals to name a few. However, you can tell that Rod Evans's voice wasn't fitting in perfectly with the song's music, but his voice on 'Lalena' (which is a cover; originally by Donovan) compliments the music perfectly. I got this album very cheap - if you are a big fan of DP, buy it now! I recommend this album to any rock music fan! VERDICT: 8/10Read full review
I bought this album for one specific track - Lalena a cover of a Donovan track. It was an absolute delight to rediscover this album (I originally bought this on vinyl more years ago than I care to remember) it is still as fresh today as it was over 30 years ago. If you want to find the origins of British rock/underground then start here. There is a vibrancy and an honesty that just does not exist today. The intermixing (juxtaposition?) of orchestral and electric and acoustic on April is a masterpiece. I should point out that I am an avid, if ageing, fan of Deep Purple
