I've seen the film version of 'Wild' and enjoyed it, so thought I would give the book a whirl knowing that the film probably omitted hallf of what actually happened. Having read varied reviews from people who absolutely loved it, to those who couldn't bear to finish it, I was curious: Was Cheryl insufferably selfish and ill-prepared, or a woman dealing with her issues honestly and frankly? Turns out I enjoyed the book immensely -much more then the film - and have already begun reading it again. Yes, she's flawed but that is what makes the read so compelling - if she had done everything perfectly then there wouldn't be a tale to tell, at least not an interesting one. Her story of her 1100 mile trek along the Pacific Crest Trail is punctuated by flashbacks to her old life, breaking up the journey and vividly showing her moving through various emotional stages to arrive at the end of the PCT a changed person, mentally and physically. Whilst a hugely insightful memoir, the end does leave you wanting to know more: what happened to her family? How did she return to life in the city afterwards? This was why I give the book 4 stars and not the full 5. Highly recommended read.Read full review

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's beautifully written and, though the subject is repetitive, one never gets bored. I would recommend it to anyone. It's brilliant.
