It's a great read and has some lovely recipes - it's probably best as an intro to the cooking and history of the area as opposed to a book for someone with more experience of Middle Eastern cookery or knowledge of the area. Would make a lovely present.

With so many recipes available on the Internet at the click of a mouse, why buy recipe books any more ? Zaitoun (and others in a similar vein) are why. The recipes are accessible (we just needed to by three ingredients not already in our larder : sumac, za'atar and unsweetened pomegranate molasses) and we were good to go. And they work, each one tastes like the photo on the page. Plus you get the story behind the people behind the food. Ours is already well-used, stained with grease and spices, so I guess it's a keeper and you'll have to find your own copy.
