There was no time to mourn when Thula Thula's human and animal family were depending on her. How Francoise survived and Thula Thula thrived is beautifully described in this charming, funny and poignant book. Their elephant herd, rescued by Lawrence, shared Francoise's grief at his passing but over time forged a new relationship with her. One day a baby, Tom, became separated from the herd and found his way into Francoise's kitchen. Another day there was a desperate race against time to save a baby who had a snare wrapped round his face and couldn't open his mouth to suckle. Meanwhile Francoise fulfilled her dream of building a rescue centre for orphaned rhinos and other wildlife. Abandoned hippo baby Charlie, who hated water, joined the centre's rhinos and quickly became best friends with a little girl rhino called Makhosi. The traumatised babies had round the clock care, including an unlikely nursemaid in the form of a German Shepherd called Duma. Brilliant, well written, informative and interesting.
A brilliant book which I can highly recommend to anyone of any age. I read the Elephant Whisperer first which was also a wonderful, interesting and very informative read, I saw an article about and Elephant in my Kitchen online and felt intrigued to read it. The first book is written by South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony and tells the true story about a herd of 'rogue' elephants on his reserve at Thula Thula. The second book is written by his wife Françoise and continues the story of conservation on the reserve following her husband's sudden death. These books make a compelling read and provide a wonderful insight into the struggles and challenges facing conservationists in the world today. I have passed both books onto a good friend to read and I know he will continue to pass them around to other people he knows who also love a good read. I can highly recommend these books.Read full review
