The DVD contains a two-part personal perspective of the WWII Italian campaign by Alan Whicker who, as an officer in the British military film unit, had priveleged access to commanders-in-chief and first-wave beach landings. His story travels from a club in London to beach landings at Sicily and Anzio, photographing the `liberation' of Rome, his personal capture of the SS in Milan (together with their military treasury), where he also filmed the body of Mussolini, and finally to Venice after the peace. His experiences include his memories of brother officers of the film unit, killed in beach landings and by land mines, the nervousness of amphibious assaults and 6 weeks shelling at Anzio, but also happier times in pleasant surroundings south of Messina, in Florence and, finally, Venice. He laments that surviving deep into old age is a double-edged sword as he has out-lived all of his life-long friends. For those who know Whicker's TV work from the 1950s to the 1980s, this film offers a fascinating view of his early development as a journalist. It is Whicker's own triumph that this film show sthat he was still evolving stylistically in his 80s, having made the journey from traditional `objective' reporting all the way to a completely `personal' approach. In a long and distinguished career, this may be his best work.Read full review

In his own style the immortal Alan Whicker tells of his wartime experiences. This DVD is a masterpiece of storytelling ( But all true!)
This is a graphic account of one man's war. Beautifully filmed and written by a true expert documentary maker, unlike the current fad for sending second rate soap opera actors to do this sort of work. This tale acts as a modern day lesson of what can happen when a world goes crazy. 43,000 allied troops dead, missing or injured in one campaign (Anzio Bridgehead) - think about that then. Watch the film, go to Italy and marvel that in historical terms this happened yesterday. The other lesson is the one of challenging fascism, still as rampant in the world in the 21st Centuary as it was in the 1930s.
whickers war is about his time spent as a journalist in the 2nd world war. i read the book and this is just as good. whickers at his best
