Velbon Ultrek UT-43 D II Tripod with QHD-43D Ball & Socket Head (UK Stock) BNIB
18 May, 2020
Overall, small, sleek, packable, moderately light, well priced and solid. I love it.
This is my first Travel Tripod. Previously I had been getting by on cheaper standard tripods. I use a Nikon D600 with the main lenses being a Nikkor 50mm F1.4, Nikkor 105 Macro and Zeiss Milvius 85mm. Firstly, for me, the UD-43 DII is the Velbon sweetspot between weight, max height level, max low level and the fold down height. The foot spread notches are a simple and solid solution for varying the footprint of the tripod (nothing to come undone). The "5-click" leg extension mechanism for height adjustments are similar to those seen in GoPro sticks. It is intuitive and so-far, very solid. Remember fewer moving parts means less wieght and thusfar, there seems to be little in penalty. There is a horizon checker in 2 planes and the proprietary quick release is solid with a "snap in" fit. With the heaviest lens on (the Milvius 85mm) the ball join holds well in a neutral position, but will fail if you are pointing the camera down. This could be solved to some degree with an ARCA Swiss conversion with a slider. Cons, there is no ballast hook but there are many work-arounds for this. Overall, small, sleek, packable, moderately light, well priced and solid. I love it. Let's see what my long term review says.
Pyramid Trek 100 (was Repel) 120ml Insect/ Mosquito Repellent Deet Spray

Pyramid Trek 100
Very effective insect repellent. I travelled to rural areas in Malaysia and Thailand, both of which are known for their mosquitos. I returned home with very few bites, compared to without spraying. Generally I applied to my hands to cover the skin to avoid wasted spray and washed my hands afterwards. My only criticism is that with hot and humid climates, the spray cannot handle sweat. Thus much more frequent use was required for the same effect.

Cable with Remote & Mic for iphone to SHURE SE535 SE425 SE315 SE215 SE846 UE900

Sadly, not very robust.
I have Shure SE315s for which this purchase was paired. The first impressions were of a neat alternative to the rather expensive original wire replacement. However, on closer inspection and use, there were major flaws. The earbud connectors have variable contact and, on most day to day use, will fail. This leaves the wearer fixed to a certain head position in order to maintain the audio signal. Don't expect to get through an entire song whilst jogging! In fact there was a heart stop moment when I found one of my earbuds completely detached in my pocket - it could have fallen off at any time. The microphone and control unit did most of what it was designed to do (ie stop/start; volume; answer calls) however the multifunction system to allow skipping through tracks never seemed to work. The wiring was thin and flimsy with no reinforcement around high stress areas in the interconnector and the jack. The wiring sheath has since started to buckle only 3 weeks into use. Especially annoying is the lack of reinforcement and malleable positioning at the area of wiring intended to wrap around the ear. This makes it impossible to keep the wiring from falling out of position. The jack is straight and thus cumbersome when your phone is inside a pocket and one is constantly wondering how the wiring will hold up after several months of bends. Furthermore, there is no clip to secure the R and L wires to eachother, which makes for further instability of the wires around the ears. All in all a lot of work is needed to improve the design. I would not recommend buying a pair for the disposable value as you are likely to require more than a few replacements and there is the possibility of uncoupling from the earbud! Nearly lost one on the train!
