Brand New Super Mario All Stars (Nintendo Wii, 2011)
11 May, 2021
Super Mario All-Stars on the Nintendo Wii: some may like it, some may not.
First off, for those wondering if the game can be played in 240p with the system set to 480i, that is not the case. This may disappoint those who want the true retro experience on their CRT television. Thankfully, the game is playable in 480p for those using a YPbPr component cable to connect their Wii to their HD television, and the upscaling to 480p looks absolutely crisp. As for the game itself, this is ultimately what you would expect from Super Mario All-Stars, originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. The four games play very nicely and there is very minimal input latency when using the Wii Remote or Classic Controller. Speaking of Wii Remote, that is the best part about the controls; this is the only Super NES game on the Wii that can be played with the Wii Remote held sideways. Sadly, not a great deal of innovation was made in this rerelease of All-Stars compared to the original. Many glitches that happen in the original are still present, though the ones that don't softlock the game are fairly minor. All-Stars was one of my most favorite games on the Super NES, and this "limited edition" on the Wii really helps to relive the memories I have of playing this game with my cousins. Overall, I am not disappointed with my purchase of this game.
