Winning With Statistics by Richard P. Runyon
Mr. Runyon is an author and was a college professor of mathematics during the 1970s. He spent a good deal of time in this book covering the basics in a charming and effective way. He also had a bit of an ax to grind in that the media and the general populous in general use numbers and statistics imprecisely. Mr. Runyon likely such behaviors to those that might run a con --- the example that the used and I recall was that of changing a coin so that it came up heads all the time --- in the example used, a con artist used a double headed coin to ‘con’ the mark. The mark in the example had brought along a person who was a statistician (sort of a hero figure) that found out the con artist by catching the example coin as it was being flipped by the con artist to reveal it as double-headed quarter. While this example and others given in the book (advertising on TV and in other media) were portrayed as being deliberately dishonest or nefarious, it has been my personal experience that such wrong claims (obviously wrong or less obviously wrong) are perpetrated by the those that don’t really know that they are wrong more often than not. The interesting part that I have observed that if shown that the subject beliefs were wrong they sometimes ignore the facts. Sometimes these ‘wrong folks’ ignore such evidence, which makes me smile, as apparently they do not wish to be confused by the facts. An all too familiar human trait. In this season of politics and election fever, one might have cause to smile.

Casino Gambling by Russell T. Barnhart (1977, Book, Ill
I enjoy reading about gambling and games of chance. Mr. Barnheart is an excellent writer and is obviously well versed in the nature of the games that he discusses. I enjoyed this book very much.

An informative read.
Very much enjoyed the book. It was very well written in a wry sort of way. The reason why it was written (as the author is well known for writing expose’s) was that there was a person that was a subject of the book that wanted the methods used to win at 21 or blackjack to be known. That being the case, the important ingredient is that of a team, there were several people working a system that required more than one person. There were several systems given --- the one that struck me most as the more effective one is betting and drawing cards in such away as to cause the dealer to bust their hand. The way that this is done is that the team sits at the same table and memorizes the shoe of cards, as difficult as it might seem. This difficult task is done by the use of mnemonics. I will leave it to the reader to look that word up. I have read a number of books on gambling now, and they all are very interesting and all have a slightly different point of view. As to the question of whether or not an individual can make money at playing cards, say, I would have to say yes it is possible. Those methods might be found with the successful stock market players, I think, as the two sets of gambling or risk, while not being identical, are similar. Perhaps using a computer that has a BASIC programming package installed on it would be of help, as this programming language has an easy to use random number generator in its syntax. You know, to program simulations.
