SMASH!(ing) follow up
An excellent fast paced story full of rage and all backed up by some vivid illustrations. It was all the better for having read Planet Hulk first. The first few pages give a VERY basic summary of why Hulk in angry but I really just don’t think you can appreciate the anger being portrayed unless you read the ordeal that Hulk went through in Planet Hulk before this. The risk of not reading PH first is that this story line of World War Hulk may seem like one big hulk tantrum. Simply shallow with all violence just being thrown in gratuitously (there really is no let up). In context this is some sweet icing on a very good Planet Hulk cake.
NB if the reader will be younger such as my 7 year old the lack of story depth and constant action DO make this a good stand alone and attention grabbing book!

A worthy addition to the collection
This is a big book/comic. The back pages gives some very wordy, in-depth and well written information about Planet Sikaar, it’s place in the solar system, nearby planets the weather conditions, wildlife, technology, politics and characters. I read all of this first thinking that it would add context to some of the things in the story. To be honest it helped just a little. Some illustrations show floating thingys and I knew what they were and whether they were friendly or not for example. However the amount of time taken to read that section of the book was hardly worth it. It was just far too much detail. The story itself is flowing and compels you to read more. My only criticism is that many of hulks fights are very predictable and short (some ending with one single blow) and came across as lazy writing. It is however a good story with some depth but really in my own opinion this book is a necessary pre read and set up for the next in the series and star of the show ‘World war hulk’ which contains non stop action, was more enjoyable but not as deep in actual story content. I would recommend this but when it finishes you will want to buy WWH to see how the story pans out.
