An easy read, with lots to make you smile
The hero of the book has the Midas touch, blundering into a succession of good money-making initiatives until he has become a rich man. In a similar way he also becomes famous as 'a bit of a card': someone who does slightly crazy things that set gossips' tongues wagging, and makes the reader smile. Like other Bennett stories this one is set in The Potteries and vividly portrays life at the time (the early 1900s) using names similar to the real ones, for places and other things, e.g. the local newspaper, the Titanic liner.

Emotionally strongly engaging
Our book club found the story very moving and the book generated plenty of animated discussion. People engaged strongly with the moral struggle of Isabel on finding an abandoned baby after losing three of her own and were very emotional about the book's ending. Her husband, Tom, seemed unrealistically morally upright and somewhat two dimensional, but we wondered whether that might be a consequence of his bitter experience in WW1: that he was probably trying to deal with post traumatic stress. Some found the love story when Isabel met Tom was laid on a bit thick. Overall, we felt that as first novel this was highly commendable. We were very interested in the geography and history of the SW corner of Australia, an area that most knew nothing about.
