Features Ordnance Survey National Grid Squares
Due to an issue with Ordnance Survey around 2002, the AA stopped overprinting their road map pages with the UK Ordnance Survey National Grid squares(e.g: TA08; OV00 etc.); replacing it with their own grid system (e.g: D5; E1 etc.)
The grid is there for use in conjunction with the gazetteer at the back of the book. The new grid does this just as well but it cannot be used to find the position of a UK OS National grid reference on the map. I don't know about the 2002 but the 2000 and 2001 versions are the last ones I've seen that use the genuine OS grid so if you want this map book for cross referencing to OS sheet maps, finding a GPS position or for Amateur Radio Worked All Britain, don't buy later versions! Untested. Appears good but an out of date product
This was an out-of-date product by 3-months. To be fair that was reflected in the price (about half price) but I didn't pick up the fact that it was out-of-date before buying it. As it is a safely item which must be relied upon to work in extreme circumstances on mountaintops in winter, the only solution before commissioning it for use is to activate one of the pair beforehand to ensure that it still works and then release the other to service.
With hindsight I should have bought an in-date product. However if this is just for everyday, non critical use in the local environment, it could be a good buy. Therefore I would only recommend it for 'local' use and not for use in extreme circumstances unless a backup is available.
