Batman Volume 4 not quite as good as 1-3.
Batman Volume 4 definitely has a different feel than the previous collections did. The first two dvd collections consist entirely of episodes from the groundbreaking BATMAN:THE ANIMATED SERIES cartoon. However, certain episodes on volume 3 and the entire collection of cartoons on Volume 4 are from THE NEW ADVENTURES OF BATMAN AND ROBIN. Most of the voices are the same, and there are new characters introduced.Nightwing makes his first appearance in Volume 4, and Robin is now Tim Drake , Batgirl is also a emi regular member of the 'team' as well. While I think the episodes on Volume 4 are great and welcome the introduction of the new characters from the Batman family, it must be said that the 4th installment is decidedly less darker than the early episodes. Batman is no longer the grim loner he was in the first two seasons, but is now the head of a team of super heroes. Robin is truly a 'boy' wonder, with wise cracks to boot. there is no camp, thank goodness. The animation is a bit different as well, viewers will notice some differences in the appearance of the major villains. Some , like Killer Croc - look better, while others , like The Joker - do not. Still a great animated series, still well worth owning. but definitely different.

Justice League;The New Frontier
Having never read the graphic novel, I had no idea what to expect when I watched this movie and was very happy with the story, animation and the bonus feature on the history of the Justice League as well. I have to say though, I was a bit taken aback by the violent scene near the beginning when Hal Jordan finds himself in a kill-or-be-killed situation when he is grappling with a North Korean soldier. A bit much for young children, I think (and by YOUNG I mean 8 years old or younger). Cold War overtones, Mccarthyesque paranoia and the difference between the American dream and the American reality are the underlying tones in this film and i think the writers did a wonderful job. While i can't make a direct comparison to the comic itself, the movie certainly makes me want to read The New Frontier. But most of all, the film pushes me further into the world of DC comics as I continue what seems to be (and only time will tell) my shift from a steadfast Marvelite to DC enthusiast. I grew up on Marvel for the most part..but as I approach my forties i find myself increasingly drawn towards the DC Universe and it is nice because there are so many new discoveries out there for me. Its like being a kid all over again. Well, almost..

Doctor Strange - The Animated Movie
Not one of my favorite Marvel characters. In fact, I knew very little about the origin of Dr. Strange until I saw this movie. Overall, I would consider this to be a very good introduction to the character. Viewers will discover that Stephen Strange was far from a 'good' person and ever further from hero material until he learned some valuable life-lessons about 'giving back'. Another thing I found interesting is that while Strange was being schooled to become the Sorceror Supreme, he also trained extensively in the use of weapons and is no slouch when it comes to swordplay or fighting with a staff. The story covers Strange's origin and provides the viewer with an enjoyable introduction to the world of the mystics and the ever-present threat to the universe - Dormmamu. Good, not great, but worth owning if you are a Marvel fan and enjoy these animated movies. Certainly no better or worse than either of the early Avengers animated features.
