A superior DVD release of “Road to Bali”
I owned a couple of other public domain DVDs of Road to Bali, both having a dark look to the picture and overall poor color resolution, not to mention the Paramount Pictures logo being cut from the beginning and end of the film. This Brentwood release uses a print apparently acquired from Columbia Pictures Television. It is in brilliant, vibrant color, and is complete from beginning to end. In addition, Road to Rio is included in this package, courtesy of the UCLA film archive. Each film is on a separate disc, and the quality of both is better than one normally expects from films this age. Without the distractions of sketchy picture and sound quality, missing footage, etc., one is free here to enjoy the antics and frequently-improvised dialogue of longtime friends Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The plots may be thin, but no matter. It is great fun watching Bob and Bing in action, and Dorothy Lamour follows their lead like a trouper, plus she is quite lovely. These films are not for everyone, but Road to Bali is worth watching for the stunning color print alone. It is a revelation compared to lesser versions. Both movies come from a more innocent time, and are fit family viewing. They are recommended to people who remember those times, or enjoy madcap entertainment in the hands of true masters.

Protective sleeve for CDs
These sleeves are almost a necessity for CDs packaged in LP-type jackets. European CD sets in LP replica formats often include these poly inner sleeves, but those made in the U. S. generally do not. The poly sleeves prevent discs from being scratched when removing or replacing a disc from stiff paper jackets. One word of caution: some LP replica jackets are too small to accommodate a poly sleeve without some compromise or adjustment, but I was generally able to use them without difficulties.

A notable TV series, but sloppily-manufactured DVDs
2 of 2 found this helpful “The Prisoner” is a wonderful, entertaining television series, conceived and executed with imagination. Unfortunately, this particular release is problematic. I owned two copies of the set at different times, both of which proved to be defective. After spending good money twice with nothing to show for it, I cannot recommend this DVD set. I would, however, support a quality release of this unique series.
