    African inspiration
Regarded as Paul Simon's masterpiece, this album is certainly credited with bringing African sounds to the attention of the wider music-buying public. As an experiment in fusing Simon's American songwriting with the sounds of the townships, it works beautifully well. The African drums, guitar sounds, accordion and, particularly effective, vocal choirs are all absorbed and melded into some fine songs: two great singles (The Boy In The Bubble and You Can Call Me Al) show how effectvely Simon has adapted his own skills. The fit is comfortable, no rough edges or uncomfortable misfits. The title track is another success story with great guitar and bass lines while Homeless is almost entirely African yet still a part of Simon's overall vision. There are weak tracks and the album concludes with something less than fireworks, so to my mind, the album falls short of the excellence of Still Crazy, but at its best, the work ranks alongside the finest in Simon's catalogue, especially on the delightful Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes, my personal favourite.
