A Sony classic
Solid, clever in design and beautifully executed, the Sony DSC-G1 offers excellent image quality proving that this is not always achieved through pixel count. For me, the stand out feature is the high resolution lcd screen and whilst no conventional viewfinder is offered, the big screen is more than adequate in nearly all lighting conditions and great for viewing recorded images. The comprehensive menu system can at first prove daunting, but like most things, familiarity soon makes things more comprehendible. The large 2GB internal memory means that you don't really need to bother with a memory card, although if you do add one, this needs to be the pro duo variant of Sony's own memory stick. Once fitted, the camera allows easy transfer from the internal memory to the memory card with consequent straightforward download to a PC.
Expensive at launch and now more difficult to find, the G1 can still be bought and from the right source, for a bargain price.
In my mind, the DSC-G1 is without doubt a Sony classic and a pleasure to own.
