Terrific Canadian band; not to be confused with USA band of same name.
The Brains from Canada are essentially a psychobilly rock band that is a few steps up the ladder from most psychobilly bands around. While essentially a psychobilly band, they blur the parameters between surf punk, rockabilly, psycho, and rock n roll to great interest all round and appeal to a wider audience. While the playing, particularly the rhythm section of drums and upright bass is frenetically fast most of the time, it does not detract from how tight they play and the quality of their musicianship. The vocals and guitar playing are very good and overall the album is a must add to any eclectic music collection.

Arguably the best of Alice Cooper's first three solo albums
Lace and Whiskey, the 3rd solo album by Alice Cooper, is possibly the best of his solo efforts up to that point, notwithstanding the album was not universally highly regarded by critics. In fact it could be argued that the solo albums to this point fail in trying to emulate the previously efforts of Alice Cooper's eponymous band. The brilliant guitar playing by Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter (both who previously toured with Lou Reed on his Rock n Roll Animal tour) is technically very good but you sometimes wish for them to step outside technical constraints and venture out a bit. The bass playing by Prakash John (who also previously toured with Lou Reed) is also very good. Dick Wagner co-wrote (along with some help by producer Bob Ezrin) most of the songs with Alice Cooper. The album may not appeal to the casual listener but should appeal to the fans. If nothing else, the album continues to indicate that Alice Cooper is still trying to find his new path after going it alone as a solo performer with a very tight and talented backing band.

Good addition to the Mercury recordings
I am a much bigger fan of Rod Stewart's early work (the recordings he made with the Mercury label) prior to his album Atlantic Crossing and what followed. That said, Atlantic Crossing and it's successor A Night on the Town took Stewart's popularity to new heights, particularly in the USA where he went in search of even bigger fame. This compilation therefore serves as a very good addition to the Mercury Recordings triple disc compilation, particularly for those who want to have compilations that canvasses Stewart's career more comprehensively. There are many very good songs on this compilation, not necessarily in my view, including the more popular songs of the period covered, which will highly appeal to other listeners. I guess I can't have it both ways though, so succinctly put, I rate this compilation as probably the best compilation covering the particular period of Stewart's recordings.
