The best recording of violin playing
I have been listening to this recording since 1978
It is good because it is the best recording ever made of Solo Bach on the Violin
That's my opinion... I am a Professional Violinist.
There are a number of other recordings... many, in fact. This one marries a genuine musical understanding of the structure of Bach, together with superlative violin schooling of the Soviet era.
It is a level of playing which is simply not heard or understood anymore.
It is a unique document into a past era of the great Violinist, Nathan Milstein.
Since neither Oistrakh, nor Kogan recorded the complete set of Sonatas & Partitas (their style was not entirely suited to this music) .. please note Kogan did record the set of 6 accompanied Sonatas with Karl Richter, and Oistrakh with Hans Pischner (hope I spelt that one right). Also, to be noted, Heifetz did record a respectable set of Solo Bach.
In the early 70s and late 60s, Grumiaux and Szeryng recorded excellent sets.. which certainly hold up to Milstein's set. Please don't miss out on this remastered and restored edition, which was done in 2016 and really extracts a warmth and detail of sound never heard before on CD. Finally we have the definitive Solo Bach.
