Walk in one family's shoes
It seems that readers are bipolar about this book, either loving it or hating it. Mature readers who have patience for the colloquial southern "talk" and the pacing of the narrative get more from this story than kids in junior high. It's a perspective on the Civil War that is unusual and personalized through one family's experience.

Nature and inner beauty
The Navajo Chant is at the heart of this lovely book of poems. Beautifully illustrated with original Native American water colors, the poems and traditional songs are inspiring and uplifting. I've had a copy since 1975 and enjoy buying copies for friends and family. Beauty is before me, And beauty behind me, above and below hovers the beautiful.
