Folk songs but not as we knew them.
I really did not know what to expect from "The Captain's Apprentice". I have several favourite compositions by Vaughan Williams but this song title was unfamiliar. I am about a third of the way through and have learned that the tune to this song he collected early in his life affected the soundscape of many of his well known pieces written as "folk rhapsodies" or evocations of melodies handed down from singer to singer. The hard lives of nineteenth century fisher folk and otherr poor communities were sung as verbal warnings. Although the book is repetitive in its use of "the song" it is also academically complete and ultimaterly very satisfying.
I can put it down but not for long. I will learn a lot about other songs I thought were "entertaining" when I heard them as pop-rock-folk pieces in the 1970's but did not take the time to look into on a deeper level.

The Sony CMT-M100 Mini Disc unit is a "Super-Mini" of a music centre.
2 of 2 found this helpful Very convenient music player. All legacy formats catered for in a half pint sized unit and half decent speakers to match. I have not used the Radio tuner yet because we have chronic FM reception but I expect it is as good as the CD, Tape and Mini Disc which are excellent for the size and simplicity of use. The overall sound quality is good but a little soft when compared (unreasonably?)to hi fi separates. If this was a car it would be a Super-mini. Just find the space of a few books in your "book shelf" switch on and you have a comprehensive system capable of powering a small room. We have it in the bedroom to replace a full rack of separates and we miss very little. The released space has pleased my wife.
I wanted a unit including a mini disc player. This one even has all the Sony MD record facilities except "Net" but I do not use that function even on my big deck.

Sony MZ R55 Classic Early Personal Mini Disc Recorded
2 of 2 found this helpful The Sony MZ R55 was probably a good seller in its day. I bought one nearly 20 years ago and it was excellent until dropped a foot or two onto the end which holds the internal gumstick battery. Since then it has only worked with the additional AA battery bow attached. This latest MZ R55 acquisition has a similar internal battery problem but the overall condition and SOUND quality are excellent on AA batteries and it still plays as a portable in a jacket pocket.
You can listen via earphones, in ear and on ear types OR run a mini stereo plug lead out to a portable amp or to the car players jack socket or to a Hi Fi amp etc. The sound quality is sufficient to see-off cassette players and MP3 players.
There are plenty of other Sony and competitors portable mini disc players but the R55 is perhaps my favourite pre-Hi MD machine.
