Well worth seeing!
2 of 2 found this helpful This beautifully made and acted film ilustrates Cromwell as a natural soldier and a man of passionate integrity trying to bring a righteous order to a chaotic situation. It also shows clearly that he was effectively a nobody when it all started! Pym and others beingthe parliamentary leaders. For me Charles's betrayal of Strafford epitomised his inadequacies and his love for his family, brilliantly portrayed by Guinness, does not outweigh his essential lack of integrity. However,I am sure that, except in battle, Cromwell was no where near as glamourous as Harris portrays him!

Mark Kermode's Best Film Ever!
3 of 3 found this helpful I had never heard of this film until I read that MK reckoned it was the best film ever made (BBC website). So I got it and can certainly recommend it as fascinating and thought-provoking. It has all the feel of a post-war movie (e.g. Reach for the Sky) with David Niven doing his bit. But then it takes a turn into the super-natural! It reminds us of the way war turns the world upside down for many ordinary people and that, surprise surprise, the true answer/real meaning/reason to go on is LOVE. Interesting original elements that have influence much more recent films. Recommended.

Even better than I remembered!
3 of 3 found this helpful I watched Porridge as a child and wanted to show them to my own children now aged 13 and 10. They are as funny as ever to the younger generation and I now appreciate more the pathos and observations on adult life. Ronnie Barker really was a great actor and comedian and here ie is in his prime. Richard Beckinsale - Kate is so like him - was excellent too and it is such a pity that he died so young. I remember the shock of his death and now I have looked up what happened on the internet another peice of the human story has slid into place.
Highly recommended.
