Speaker has been around forever and still a good one. But ....
I had one of these speakers at least 8 years or so ago, and it sounded great then, plenty of volume and good sound quality. And my new one is just as good.
However the original one had one serious drawback, and this one has the same problem, although hopefully, I've solved it. The speaker has an on-off switch, and the way you turn it on is to turn the chrome ring around the speaker grill while holding onto the black base. The old 1 I had turned very hard and got worse, until I couldn't turn it on at all and I ended up just getting rid of it.
This new one has the same problem. At first I could hardly get it to turn at all. But I just held on grimly and worked and worked it till at least I could reliably get it on and off. It was still stiff and I remembered the old one, so I sprayed some WD-40 into a cup and used a tooth pick to spread it sparingly around the rim, at the joint. Then I worked it some more, and eventually it got easier, although never loose. So far so good, but it's a terrible design and has been that way for probably 10 years or more.
The saving grace is the sound quality, particularly compared to the many new, cheaper ones on the market. It's loud and it sounds good.

Best MP3 player available for my needs
I already owned one of these and liked it enough to by another. I use them to play bird calls, and the primary feature I like is the speakers, which have good volume and sound quality. There is really nothing else I know of available right now that is close to equal in this respect. Possibly the Ipod, but they are terribly overpriced and my Ipod 2G has such terrible battery life it's useless. And I dislike working with Itunes to the point that I won't use it.
Most MP3 players don't even have speakers; carrying an external speaker is just a nuicance.
The indexing to get to the track you want is also quite easy, so long as you don't try to break groups down in folders. I wish the indexing would work the same there, but it does not.
There are lots of 3rd party chargers, cases, etc. available for it at reasonable prices. Overall a good product.

Too bad they don't make one like this any more.
1 of 1 found this helpful I use this recorder for a particular use, playback of bird calls. It is excellent for that, the speakers are loud enough in most cases that I don't need an external speaker and the sound quality is plenty good enough. I also own 2 544's but the battery finally died in one. But that's after about 8 years or so of use. There are a couple of minor things in the software I would change, but that may be because of my specific use.
