A Memorable Debut
Nicholas Ray's debut film as a director and remarkably good it is. The fate of the lovers at odds with society is touching and involving, and the rest of the cast are on their mettle giving convincing performances.

A suspenseful journey
A neglected minor classic well performed by the cast. My only criticism is that the ending is not satisfactorily resolved. The film simply ends on the image of the hering boat returning to harbour. Is the central character to be arrested and sentenced for murder? Is the boy to be returned to be returned to the unsympathetic foster parents? If so, the outcome is tragic.
