An ode to Chicago, but much more
Why does this film always make me cry, and why do I revisit it, with the same expectation? A science fiction exercise, perhaps, but the plot really takes a forwards and backwards view of ancestry, and loss of family. Alma, the daughter, is especially engaging. I always like the marriage scene, the first dance where a small orchestra plays "Love will tear us apart again".
Time travel always have to obey the rules, that nothing can change the past. Ridiculous, but moving.

The mystery of the Francigena
The Pilgrims road to Rome is a particular interest of mine and that it exists at all, in a secular world, is part of the mystery and romance of a route that defies time, and to a large extent, space.
The first section is not the prettiest or the more physically demanding, but all pilgrimages must begin from home to a distant land that becomes mystical in every step of repetition. I have walked parts of the Francigena in England and Italy, but always from south to north, and this is entirely the wrong thing to do. The pilgrims route is to the Holy city and the book follows this, as do the signage en route. I am using this book to plan my journeys into France, with the ultimate intention to complete the journey, but that involves faith, hope and love, and I may be found wanting, who knows?

Oil City - a unique and special place
Doctor Feelgood and Oil City; Canvey Island in particular, but describing a location stretching from Thurrock to Shoeburyness. My homeland, my people, my view on life, my love of music. Raucous roughened, manic and honest. A moment in time when R&B from the Thames Delta eclipsed anything from the USA. Did it last? No, but it was heroic and gave pride to those that dwelt by the marshes and factories of the Thames estuary. A moment in time from kids dreaming of being pirates and sailing the oceans, to being musical gods fuelled by alcohol and anger. Totally brilliant and should be watched by everybody and adored by those it was dedicated to.
