The bulb is what is supposed to warm the beads, but the bulb starts so low & doesn't even really get hot enough to release any scents from the beads. Bad design. The light & sound is ok. The sound doesn't start until 15 minutes before the alarm time & is so loud that it normally wakes me up as soon as it starts, so I just set my alarm 15 minutes later than I really need to because I know it's going to wake me up. I do like waking up to nature sounds vs a blaring alarm though & I also like that the alarm can be used as a night light. I'm glad I didn't pay full price (these things sold for $80!). I would have been really disappointed. Glad to have found it on Ebay for less.
