The definitive account
This publication by an American author focusses solely on the technical side of the Beatles' career - as the title succintly states, the 'gear' or equipment they used whilst performing and recording. This centres largely, as you might expect given that three members of the band were guitarists, on the make and model of every single six and twelve string -and four-string in McCartney's case, instrument they ever owned and played, at home, on stage or in the studio. The subject matter also regularly extends to the type of recording equipment and microphones used whilst commiting their songs to vinyl in the studio. There is also an equal attention given to the various drum kits used by Ringo Starr, without which such a subject could not claim to have been properly covered.
Now this may sound like the ultimate nerdy love-fest of a 'geeks only' publication to many people, and given the wrong treatment it could well have turned out as such.In the extremely capable hands of Andy Babiuk though, it is in fact a wholly engrossing, entertaining and astonishingly well-researched volume peppered with anecdotal evidence and many lavish colour photos - it ought to stand, given the depth of research and information presented within its' pages, as the definitive account of it's subject.
Admittedly, if you aren't already a Beatle fan then this book will probably have very limited appeal but given the extraordinary achievments of the Beatles within the context of pop music history then it is bound to be of interest to a great many musicians and aspiring players and probably quite a few die-hard fans as well as anyone with an interest in knowing the particular tools and various recording methods they employed to create their 'sound' on a technical level.
Surprisingly perhaps, by far the greater part of the book concentrates on the period up to and including 1966, with a considerable amount of attention to the early years in Hamburg. In a 256-page book, it doesn't arrive at 1967 - when their 'Sgt Pepper' masterpiece was recorded - until almost page 200. This is probably quite a balanced approach, given the amount of time the band devoted to touring and performing on stage; something they completely ceased to do after 1966 with the exception of their final rooftop performance after recording the 'Let It Be' album.
This book isn't simply a catalogue of technical equipment by any means - it places the subject matter firmly within the context of the story of the Beatles as a musical unit, both in terms of their development as a performing band, and their acheivements as recording artists. Included are anecdotes and comments from people like George Martin, Geoff Emerick (their recording engineer for much of their career)and many others. The group's devotion to musical excellence can be clearly seen in the way they chose the instrument brands they favoured as well as their insistence on perfection in the way they acheived their recorded sound.
If you have an interest in the subject, then this is a book you will not regret buying. It is published in paperback and hardback in large format, and is beautifully illustrated and written.
