Great lens
This lens takes fantastic photos in macro mode and is great for portraits as well. Like all macro lenses, the aperture varies a small bit, depending on how close you are to the subject, so don't expect a true constant 2.8. I think you will more reliably get a 3.0 or 3.2 aperture, especially in macro mode, but in macro mode you shouldn't be shooting with such a wide aperture anyway. It's not a fast focusing lens either, but it is very accurate and razor sharp. I use it more for portraits, than my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR2, because it is lighter and rakes just as good photos on full frame and apsc bodies. Buy this multipurpose lens and you'll have made an excellent long term investment.

Has potential
This lens feels solid and far better than a kit lens, if you get a good copy. The copy I bought used was not so great. The lens itself is nicely built, but the VC is a bit wonky. With the VC on, I don't get sharp images. However, when I switch off the VC, my images are exceptionally sharp, even wide open at 2.8. I just keep the VC switched off at all times & I feel confident using this lens for important photos. I have several tamron lenses and they all are fantastic, especially the VC (vibration compensation). I think that I was sold a bad copy on this one, but I'm not upset, because I can still get great shots with the lens.
