My first introduction to the progressive rock genre was through the great Virgil Donati. It was only a few years later that I got into Dream Theatre. Having played with both these artists, I decided to take a listen to Derek Sherinian's solo work.
'Black Utopia' was the second CD from Sherinian that I purchased after getting enough of a tease from 'Molecular Heinosity'. 'Black Utopia' is immense in both sound and ambition. The album takes you through a roller coaster of musical experiences from progressive metal to jazz fusion and melodic instrumentals with a sprinkle of neoclassical overtones throughout thanks to Yngwie's influence. The musician guest list is impressive (Malmsteen, Lukather, Wylde Sheehan and co), and their contributions do not disappoint. Malmsteen's efforts are inspired and the three way dueling between Malmsteen, Wylde and Sherinian on the track 'Axis of Evil' is worth the purchase price alone!
This album (like all the other Sherinian albums) is very much guitar orientated, which although is not a bad thing, I would like to hear more of Sherinian's keyboard virtuosity. This is not a negative but more of a personal preference.
If you like your instrumental music fast, fierce and uncompromising with a few (many?) twists and turns along the way, then 'Black Utopia' is very highly recommended and is arguably (in my opinion) one of his best solo albums.

High quality stuff that doesn't disappoint!
After picking up and absolutely loving their self titled CD, I was hooked on these guys and buying their second offering was a must....and glad I did, I was not disappointed!
Genesis picks up where Talisman left off - driving guitar oriented riffs along with the master vocal of Mr JS Soto. The production is great with no filler in site and the musicianship is superb.
If you can find the 2CD edition at a reasonable price (I was in luck and found it for under $15!), then I would recommend it. It includes re-worked versions of some of the songs along with some demos.
Fantastic disc that comes very highly recommended. A must addition to any fan of guitar oriented AOR.

A must for the KISS fan...
Age shall not weary them....Despite the guys going into their 4th decade, they still pull off a mega spectacle. The video of the concert is shot with a "LIve" theme and by the end of it I felt that I was actually at the show. The song list covers most of the classics with a good mix of both old and new, and the set with the orchestra sounds absolutely awesome! It certainly gives you a twist on songs you've probably heard a hundred times before but only they come out sounding better (if that's possible!). Seeing the entire orchestra is KISS makeup rockin' to the classics is something else.
The backstage footage with KISS and the MSO is great. It was good to see how things came together from the early beginnings of this idea right through to the final gig with commentary from each of the band members providing a fantastic insight into the behind-the-scenes build up to a KISS show.
These DVDs are great visually and the sound is all there. If anything though, I thought that there were too many cut-aways to the crowd and the camera did not stay on the band members for long enough at a time for my liking. More shots of the whole band playing would've given a greater experience of the KISS stage show. But these are only minor personal preferences. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the DVDs and I thought that they were excellent value for money having picked this set up for just under $10!
If you haven't got a live KISS DVD, or even if you have, I strongly recommend adding this to your collection.
