Still the best device for certain things, 17 years on?
The question mark is because I haven't of course used every device there is, though I do occasionally read up on what is currently available. If you can get over the screen and the limited connectivity (it's actually very good at connectivity, but with old technology!), and just get on with using this thing, then you quickly realise just how incredibly useful it is. I particularly value: * The ability to write anywhere, typing quickly, and for a very long time ( 20 hours) before the batteries run out. * The ability to change the batteries easily - it's just 2xAA standard batteries. Rechargeables also work. * The ability to back up to internal compact flash very easily, and to get text from there to a modern PC pretty easily. * The very flexible alarm features - it makes a great alarm clock / timer etc, either at home or when travelling. It can also be used as a dictaphone, taking voice notes without even needing to open it up (the record button is external and automatically starts the recording application). It is admittedly a bulky dictaphone by modern standards, but still it serves to make it an even more complete solution for mobile writing / idea catching. There are many, many more impressive features, including the fact that it comes with everything you need to program it, and the third party software that is still available for it. I've played Zork on this thing, as just one example.
TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED The Complete Series 19 Disc Box Set Fast Post
    05 Oct, 2016
    Much better than expected
I bought this on a bit of a whim, as I had very vague memories of one or two episodes from childhood and wanted a bit of nostalgia. First things first, yes it would be better to call the series 'tales of the predictable', but really that does nothing to detract from the entertainment value - in fact trying to predict the endings is often half the fun. Plus there are some genuinely surprising endings - 'hijack' being the best episode so far for the ending. I probably shouldn't be writing a review until I've watched all the episodes - but there are 112 in total, and even though I've had the occasional evening binge-watching them, I'm still only on about episode 60-something. Each episode is about 25 minutes long, so that's 25 hours I've spent so far! Definitely good value for money on that score. So far the episodes have been far more good than bad, and this has turned out to be one of the most entertaining things I've spent money on in quite a while. A great collection of a significant icon of British TV history, still fun to watch today.
