A Plague on Both Your Houses/An Unholy Alliance by Susanna Gregory
Not exactly a total escape from today's horror as it's set in the time of the Black Death in 1348, a time that's far from idyllic, but it's a compulsive detective story. Matthew Bartholomew, the hero, is a doctor administering to the sick and teaching medicine to the young students of Cambridge. He, usually unwillingly, gets embroiled in trying to combat corruption in the university and outside.

Great sense of place - Colchester in the 1980s - interesting detective and good storyline
The first in a series about detective Nick Lowry. Best to start with this one to get a feel of how the author writes.

As above - a very good medieval whodunit set in Cambridge
It's a very good medieval whodunit. Good research so that it rings true.
