British Railways Locomotives & Coaching Stock 2016 Edition Pub by Platform 5
14 May, 2016
More of the same from Platform 5
Formulaic retreading of the British train fleet story, from the Platform 5 team. The loco sections contain glimmers of real traction excitement, but before you can bellow out of the carriage window or muster a phlegmatic shout of 'MY LORDZ' you're into the morass of rubbish modern EMUs and at this point I nearly lost the will to live. Only glad I bought the new DISCHARGE cd to see me through this difficult phase. Can't wait for next year's edition. 3/10.
BACHMANN 39-380A 1:76 OO SCALE BR Mk2A BSO Brake Second Open Blue & Grey
13 Jul, 2016
Recent run of Bachmann's Mk2 is about the definitive article now they've fixed the livery dimensional errors.
Current RRP is a bit scary now coaches are up in the forties and fifties, but if you can bag yourself one with some supplier discount then there's really no alternative if you're modelling a BR main line from 1967 onwards. Such an elegant job of an attractive if somewhat functional prototype means that I'm reluctant to weather my rake, although changing running numbers will be essential.

UK SUBS Endangered Species
If you were fortunate to come across this album on vinyl (as I was), you will already be aware that this is by far the most ambitious and best produced album that the UK Subs have delivered to date. The closest an old school punk band has come to a concept album, perhaps. Until recently, if you wanted to listen to Endangered Species on CD, you had to put up with the double issue that runs right into the generic, by comparison, Huntington Beach, which is like a slap in the face after listening to Endangered Species. The later studio set is culled from 1987 (five years on), when many of the surviving 'old guard' inexplicably speeded up their delivery to surf the all-consuming hardcore wave, usually to very lame effect. The intervening Flood of Lies, despite Charlie having recruited an entire new line up by 1984, marks the transition without completely floundering. On the cd rerelease of Endangered Species you are treated to four bonus tracks including the Urban Dogs' classic, and live favourite to this day, 'Limo Life,' plus the rousing 'Plan of Action' that started life as B-side of the menacing, slow-paced 'Countdown,' with its sampled intro sounds of urban disorder. Almost every track here is killer. The title track starts off the album with typical UK Subs energy and delivery. 'Ambition' carries on where the Pistols' Seventeen left off, with Sir Charles of Harpole treating us to some of his trademark 'harp' - harmonica. Fear of Girls sees Sir Charles in reflective mood. Sensitive Boys and Down on the Farm (the latter covered - inadequately - by Guns'N'Roses) hint at a more subtle approach that is mastered perfectly as the album continues with the Wiresque vibe of %8x5 (divide by eight multiply by five is the conversion of kilometres into miles, conceived on the band's exhaustive European tours) and the Asimovian 'I Robot.' Flesh Wound rounds the album off perfectly but still ends too soon. I'm in good company in considering this record as the pinnacle of the Subs' achievements. Guitarist Nicky Garratt, who produced the record reveals that it is his favourite work. It certainly captures the power of The Subs better than Glitter Band producer Mike Leander had managed on the frankly awkward previous lp Diminished Responsibility in 1981, complete with its jarring faux New Romantic artwork. Unlike many re-releases, the New Red Archives treatment comes with complete reproductions of the original cover art as well as lyrics and photos inside, including a color photo on the disc itself. It's obvious that this was a labour of love for everyone involved. Depending on how you look at it, the UK Subs either degenerated into mediocrity or went back to their roots. I prefer to think of Endangered Species as a perfect snapshot of one of the many directions that the early punk bands made possible by destroying accepted interpretations of popular music. Footnote, the Subs frontman is Charlie Harper (Lord Mayor designate of Punk Rock City), and NOT Charlie Parker, as eBay would have it!
