Unforgettably Perfick....
2 of 2 found this helpful I bought this dvd set years ago and I've watched it many times. I absolutely love the storylines and the characters - every single one of them.
Ma Larkin played by Pam Ferris is a casting triumph, she is everything that you would expect from a 50s smallholding housewife and the chemistry between Pam Ferris and David Jason who plays Pa Larkin is truly believeable.
If you enjoy gentle and intelligent dramas set in bygone times, in beautiful Kent, this is the one for you.

The Queen of Fashionistas gets her claws out...
With a screen icon like Meryl Streep in the driving seat, ably supported by a case with impeccable timing and displaying the 'fashionista temperament' to a tee, this film should have been great.
It could have been great but, in my opinion, it just wasn't 'biting' enough. It wasn't the fault of the actors but of the script itself. I think if you're going to make a film about the fashion industry and you can get a screen idol like Meryl Streep to play the lead role, the material and script need to be top class.
When I watched the film I was surprised that more hadn't been done... I wanted to cringe with delight at the political incorrectness and I wanted to laugh out loud at the parody that is the 'size zero' industry... but I didn't, although I did enjoy the film I wouldn't watch to watch it more than once or twice.
It was good, not great but definitely worth watching for the performances of Meryl Streep and Hector Elizondo.

Thirties elegance and detective drama at its very best!
0 of 1 found this helpful I just can't picture David Suchet in any other role but Poirot, even though he is a prolific actor in his own right, he will always be Poirot to me. His portrayal of Agatha Christie's little, fastidious, Belgian detective is exactly how I imagine him to be.
Peril at End House has been dramatised perfectly from the book with a superb cast of 'disaffected young things' with nothing pressing on their time other than their absorbption into the high-class social scene of the day (the 1930s), with all the excesses this entails.
The attention to period detail and the faithfulness to the spirit of Dame Christie's book makes this drama a pure joy to watch. The story is compelling and the viewer is left with the clear message that justice has prevailed.
Hugh Fraser deserves particular mention in his role of Captain Hastings - Poirot's devoted but generally clueless comrade. Hastings stumbles across clues with a fine disregard for logic yet unwittingly, presents Poirot with the solution to the case.
Parts 1 and 2 of the dvd run concurrently; the story was only split into two parts because of the length.
Of the series of recent Poirot dramatisations with David Suchet - my favourites were this one, 'Five Little Pigs' and 'Dumb Witness'. All were true to the books and the acting and settings period perfect.
However, I thought the redramatisation of 'Death on the Nile' was a huge disappointment from start to finish although no expense had been spared, the real stars of the cast stood out too brilliantly from the non-stars and the whole film didn't really seem to gel or flow in the way that Christie's plots always do. David Suchet is excellent as always but, for me, it is the Ustinov version of this film that is worth watching.
