The Chronicles of Riddick- "Dark Fury"
Although I enjoyed "Pitch Black" , the first movie to feature Vin Diesel's hard as nails anti-hero John Riddick , bad word of mouth and poor reviews put me off the follow up, " The Chronicles of Riddick". It was a couple of years later , when a friend recommended the movie , that I got round to watching it and I realised that in fact ,it was an overlooked gem of a film . Overblown , daft as all Hell and taking itself much too seriously , but a gem all the same . Anyhow , though I knew of the animated feature " Dark Fury" , I'd not been able to find a copy of the DVD until now . (To be honest , I'd not really given it much thought , but I had kept one eye open for it). The movie acts as a linking device between both the movies and as such is very sucessful . High production values and the involvement of many of the top names in current Eastern animation result in a high quality production which should please both fans of "Anime" and the live action movies equally .My only real criticism is that the feature itself is a little short at about half an hour,and the story seems to end just as it's getting into it's stride,but I understand the reasons for it's brevity. After all,this was a direct to DVD production , not "Shrek The Third"! The disc is loaded with great extras,shedding light on not only "Dark Fury", but also the other two movies.In this age of sequels , remakes , re-imaginings and the like , the universe of John Riddick offers a refreshing alternative and deserves to be appreciated for what it is ,an imaginative ,original Science-Fiction franchise which was killed before it was given a chance to shine . Highly recommended .
