The Greatest Band Ever, at their most eccentric best!
This is a great album that hasn't been off my CD player since I got it. The versatility, musicianship and creativity of the greatest band ever really comes across in every track. It makes you realise how the Clash were sampling, dubbing and experimenting with musical styles before any other acts and on a wider scale. This is a truly eclectic album that most record companies would probably have edited and whittled-down, depriving the listening public of a great many treats, but the Clash were adamant that a triple album was to be released for the price of a double album, at their own personal expense in terms of royalties and receipts, and they were right to do so, as every track has something to say and contributes something to the whole. You might argue that the material gets a bit thin towards the end of the album, but you're still looking at 24 quality tracks and an album title that celebrates a great revolution! If only this band's values were more in evidence today. This album is special: it is like no other Clash album in that it shows them at the height of their powers. How only 5 tracks make it onto "Essential Clash", I fail to comprehend. I would add Up In Heaven, The Leader, Police On My Back (even if it is a cover), One More Time and The Call Up. It's worth purchasing just for "Somebody Got Murdered" alone.

The Pretenders - The Singles (CD 1987)
1 of 1 found this helpful If, like me, you're a fan of Chryssie Hynde's haunting, plaintive tones, the band's punchy baselines and melodious guitar riffs, or you simply find yourself recalling with fondness the rock scene of the late seventies/early eighties, or you're too young to remember it and you're sorry you missed it in the first place, you'll really appreciate this anthology of their 45s. Hearing them in succession like this makes you aware of the subtle changes in style that occurred over the years, but the over-riding consistent factor is the tight musicianship that characterised this great rock and roll band. The only downside is the rather out-of-character inclusion of "I've Got You Babe", Chryssie's joint venture with UB40; it very much comes across as something of an afterthought - switch off after track 15, the memorable "My Baby" for a lasting effect.
