Nerve wracking
It was effective, and slackened the immersion element, which required very hefty blows to eventually free - seven strikes with a 2.5 lbs mash hammer before it broke the grip, each blow stronger than the previous one. Any of which could have split the relatively soft copper cylinder.
Once it moved that initial one centimetre the rest was easy.
It takes a lot of nerve to use such force for a skilled tradesman bearing in mind the fragility of the materials involved, but it had resisted the use of other efforts including the BOX spanner which does not deliver the "sharp impact" through the useless light tommy bar provided and not even with an improved heavier tommy bar.
One flaw was the very slack fit of the ring spanner which had to be filled with steel packers.

As a ball for the dog retrieving it is fine, but the squeaker has stopped working after only 4 or 5 days use,
