new FLIR E6 WiFi Infrared thermal detector: 160×120 IR on 320×240 MSX in 3” LCD
02 Jan, 2018
Expensive but useful for my electronics business
I had been using a low cost IR camera +the FLIR TG165) which is basically a spot meter with an uncalibrated low-res thermal camera added. It was useful for pointing out where the hot spots were in electronic assemblies that we maintain, and affordable. However, the resolution was a bit too low to clearly see details on some PCB assemblies. So, I looked for a higher resolution camera, and quickly found that the prices go exponential with increasing resolution. I finally found the E6 on eBay at a discount from the mfr. List price and bought it. It has a 160x120 IR camera resolution twice that of the TG165-- less than the 320x240 I wanted, but it was affordable while the better one was not. This unit is adequate for my present need, and just BTW, has also been useful for finding spots in my home where better insulation was needed (especially useful with the cold spell we are having just now!!) I wish the cost of these things would come down some; there is some competition from SEEK, but their products just did not seem to be as well made or as well calibrated. I also did not want a unit that requires your phone to use it, since I am using it for other things constantly! The FLIR unit is stand-alone and it resides on my workbench for immediate use all the time. To sum it up, the FLIR E6 is a good IR camera but like most of these products, is overpriced. It is a good deal, though, if you can find one at a discount or used.
Brand New Fluke 179 TRMS Multimeter, Original Box, Accessories
16 Jan, 2018
Good general purpose meter and well made
I bought this to replace a "no name" brand multimeter that has been reliable, but is very s-l-o-w to update the display when making a measurement. Things like how fast a meter responds are generally not specified or even mentioned in their description pages,. But for me it really was a nuisance to have to keep the probes on a tiny SMT pad for sometimes 4 or 5 seconds to get a stable reading. For the Fluke 179 series , they at least mention in the info page that it is fast, so this--- and their reputation for better product quality-- determined my purchase decision. In use, it is indeed a lot faster to make a reading than most meters I have used. It is *not* instant, but it's good. And, the build quality is good too--- it is heavy and solid and the switch feels solid and it clicks into each position without the slop common to so many cheap meters you can find online. Those $29 do-everything meters you find by the hundreds online work sort-of OK, but, don't expect them to last long! Basically, this is an example of "you get what you pay for". So far, fully satisfied with the Fluke.
Lego 2x2 White and Grey Turn Plates (30 pieces) #3680/#3679

Lego has expanded since I was a kid!!
It began when I got a LEGO set for a friend with disabilities at a group home; and I found out how many NEW parts and kits they have made since I first grew up with the (basic) LEGO stuf!! This part is a good example of one that didn't exist "back in the day"... Anyway, now we are BOTH playing with these, and have added a few of the more unusual parts to the set. and BTW, I am finding out this is a great stress-buster for those of us who aren't quite kids anymore:)
