Even with the myths stripped, a summer for Brits to be proud of
I'm a long-time Deighton admirer, right from the very first spy novels, all gritty, intelligent stuff (if a little misogynistic from time to time), through to 'Bomber', a fictionalised account of the devastation of a German town by RAF Bomber Command, obviously based on what is known of the Dresden raid but laced with fascinating insights into who and what the RAF was at the time and lots of fascinating trivia about the aircraft, how they got where they got, then how the enemy defended itself. Deighton's social chip on the shoulder gets a bit tiresome from time to time, but that's OK - the RAF was very snobby, the Air Ministry were (are) utter asses. Then 'Fighter', a brilliant technical account of the Battle of Britain, really rich in detail of the histories of tactics and planes, not a lot of atmosphere, but excellent. I missed 'Blitz'.
To 'Battle of Britain': Deighton graduated as a designer and photographer before he became a highly successful author (clues in 'Blow-up'). He arranged 'B of B' spread by spread himself, rather in the old 'Picture Post' or later Time-Life fashion. Excellent photographs from everywhere, none of them the tired, routine snaps of the time we all know all too well, with his clear, purpose-drawn diagrams and maps, all very well-researched, are complemented by clear, succinct, professionally written text. The planes, people, strengths and weaknesses are here - Brit and German - with pilot notes, quotes, press cuttings, bags of atmosphere. Of course, being Deighton, he cannot resists debunking a lot of the mythology (and there's a lot to bebunk...) If you want to stay in rattling-good-prang Spitfire heaven with smoking 109's falling right and left and Britain standing alone to save the world, go play PC games. This is as near to the reality as you'll ever get without doing an awful lot of research. Deighton's done it for you - the Battle in perspective, the machines and the folks. My only complaint is that it's a tad shallow in places, but if you buy 'Fighter' at the same time, there won't be much you won't know about that summer in the air.
Buy the two in tandem, you won't be disappointed.
I can't think of any directly comparable books, although I'm sure Osprey/Chris Chant/Richard Humble and the usual crew will have something sensible to offer.

Essential tool
I'd hardly describe it as "compelling" but I didn't want anything negative to appear in the review, It's the definitive style guide for anyone who works in the editing trade. End of.

Cheap and practical
Does the job - counting rings in fish-scales - and it's easy tto use, quite easy to keep clean. I ;like it.
