Wonderful book
A really good read based around the experiences of Eric and a TV crew making a program about a new Wainwright walk. Eric Robinson has a wonderful sense of humour and a way with words and tells his tale with much aplomb and wit. This was a light, amusing read and the reminisces of his experiences of and with Wainwright make it a lovely read for any walker and lover of the great outdoors.
Wainwright: The Biography by Davies, Hunter Hardback Book The Cheap Fast Free

Excellent. A must-have for all A.W. Wainwriht fans.
This is a very and readable authorised biography of A.W. Wainwright’s life. It’s comprehensive, illuminating and a jolly good read. Perhaps it includes more excerpts from Wainwright’s letters in it than is ideal, but upon discovering such a treasure trove of letters that reveals so much of the man, it’s very understandable that Hunter Davies felt impelled to use so much of it (Indeed he later followed up this biography with a whole book containing Wainwright’s correspondence). I’m not sure Alfred Wainwright comes across as a particularly nice chap, particularly in his youth, but I did warm very much to his older curmudgeonly self of later years, and of course, one can only admire his incredible work as writer, artist and guide. There is no doubt he was a genius of a kind and his 7 pictorial books of the Lake District, his Pennine Way Walk guide, and the super Coast to Coast Walk he designed (and subsequent book) are a grand legacy and gift to the Walkers of our nation. This biography adds much to our knowledge of this quiet, inspired but retiring man. It’s an all encompassing book written with much skill, understanding and sensitivity by Hunter Davies. I am sure most Wainwright fans will welcome and enjoy it. I did, but I would also recommend that you read Wainwright’s wonderful autobiography, Memoirs of a Fell Walker too. It’s a lovely book that I have happily read and returned to on many occasions over the years.

There's something about this book ...
There's something about this book that makes you come back to it. Quite what is hard to put your finger on but come back to it I have on more than one occasion. The writing is good but not the ‘blow you away’ exceptional; however surprisingly, its charms get a hold of you and force a revisit. Certain bits stick in your mind and nag away. The photos in here are stunning. Whilst it is not a photo book its shape has clearly been designed to accommodate and showcase what photos there are to better effect than if it had been a usual A5 shaped book. This book made me want to walk in the Wilds of Scotland, and indeed got me exploring a wide range literature on wild walking and mountaineering in Scotland. For that alone it has been a welcome addition to my bookshelf.
