AC Tone - How do they do it?
This is one versatile overdrive. It does a very good job at emulating a Vox AC30. I own a 1968 AC30TB and it has an unique sound - a sound that this pedal can approximate surprisingly well. It's an amp emulator so it sounds convincing and valve-like even when plugged straight into a mixing desk or recording device. It also sounds great through both a valve amp and a solid state amp. In fact it lends a valve like character to a solid state amp, making it feel more like a valve amp for the player.
But the AC Tone can do more than just the classic Vox crunch. It does the on the verge of breaking up sound all the way up to that creamy, compressed bloom that a cranked AC30 is famous for. This pedal can deliver even more overdrive than that too. The bass, mid and top knobs really do colour the sound and can deliver a scooped sound or a middley sound that cuts through the mix well. It's worth noting too that the pedal does not lose the bottom end of your clean tone like some pedals can do. There's also two seperate knobs that deliver varying flavours of overdrive. The 6 knobs really do deliver so many tonal and overdrive options that this pedal delivers a lot of sounds.
Ideally I could do with two of these for gigs-one set for a slight valve break up sound and the other on full overdrive! And at this great price that's not impossible! As an owner of quite a few boutique overdrives I consider this pedal as good as most and better than some pedals three times the price. Buy one - it punches well above its weight.
