I will never go back to friction pegs
I am not a cellist but play an instrument of similar string length and fretlessness called the sarod. The sarod is a plucked instrument and traditionally uses wooden friction pegs.
My luthier and I decided to try these pegs by altering the sarod's headstock into an "open pegbox" design so as to accommodate the gears in the middle of the peg shaft.
This has made my instrument (and several derivatives now for my students) at least 50 percent more stable than before.
These pegs hold tuning very well. In fact I could keep my instrument tuned, take an 8 hour flight with the sarod checked in and it emerges from the cargo hold perfectly in tune. So, thank you Wittner for this marvelous design.
