Brother HL-5240 low cost laser printing
3 of 3 found this helpful Bought this to replace a basic HP laser which was struggling to cope with a volume of around 400 pages a week.
After looking at all the major models, this seemed the best compromise for size, speed and running costs.
The one I had was a recon, with 6000 pages printed. It came with a used cartridge which has now printed 2000 pages without problem.
Approx £18 on ebay for a new toner, with a yield of 7000 pages, compared to the HP which was costing me £14 for 2000 pages.
Good size tray holds around 150 sheets comfortably.
The best thing for me is that when printing loads of emails, it doesnt pause between each one, which the HP did, meaning I now get around 25 pages a minute, instead of about 8.
Had to download the XP drivers from Brother but that was no problem. Vista installed this automatically, as should Win 7.
Works best on cheap copier paper, better quality paper tends to curl up with the heat...the cheap supermarket value paper doesnt.
...updated: Still using this a year on. Have bought an extra tray off ebay. The original tray tells the printer it is the last tray and so is moved to the bottom, meaning that the new tray gets more use.
I have now changed my PC and it works fine with Win 7, with no drivers required. I have changed the toner for a remanufactured one off ebay with no issues and printer now shows 12518 pages printed.
Drum shows 49.9% remaining. Drums are reasonably priced on ebay so will replace when required. Remarkably, error list shows just 2 errors since I bought it, the toner end and a paper jam. ...stated life of the main parts is 100,000 pages. I have seen nothing to make me think this is not true.
If you want something to print up to 5000 pages a month, look no further.
...another update. 2 years on. This now has a page count of 43282. Still no major issues. Due mostly to my own fault, it has had a few paper jams (6 in the last 25000 pages). The last toner printed 14900 pages (another refurbished ebay one). I use a manual USB switch to print from several PCs now, which works fine. I cannot recommend this thing enough. It is probably the biggest money saving thing I have ever bought.
Print quality is still excellent, with no marks or blobs on the page. The only slight problem it has is with image rich PDF prints of multiple pages. The internal memory is upgradeable which I expect would solve this.
Another Update, August 2015: I've had this for 5.5 years now. Still no issues. It works fine with Windows 7 and Windows 10. It's printed 56,000 pages (print rate has slowed due to using a thermal printer for labels). I replaced the drum earlier this year, it was surprisingly cheap on ebay and a doddle to fit. It's still as good as the day I bought it and the last fault (a paper jam) was 9,000 pages ago (when I used printer paper instead of copier paper). It's brilliant.

Not suitable for badly clouded headlights
3 of 4 found this helpful First sanding pad is not rough enough, could not get through the lacquer even after about an hour on just one for 4 headlights. I gave up and have ordered a drill attachment set. May be suitable if your lights are not too bad to start with.
