Rare and interesting films from the pioneer era!
1 of 1 found this helpful For students of early film (or for anybody seriously interested in the subject) this box is a "must have" item: The three DVD's contain a hoard of early films, both shorts and feature length, from 1897 to 1913, with the emphasis on ca. 1905 to 1910. Many of the earliest have no actual plot, as the display of moving pictures of any kind was a spectacle rare enough for the audience of those days, while the later ones are quite advanced, even by today's standard. Look out for some rare, tinted versions as well as a collection of 1905 (!) cabaret talkies, with original sound, displaying musical numbers of that day. It's rare enough to see them, but to both see and hear them is sensational, even with the technical limitations of that time and the damage unavoidable after over 100 years.

Kein Original, reine Fälschung.
Wie so viele Klingen von Gillette handelt es sich hier leider um eine reine Fälschung, völlig wertlos und wohl auch nicht -wie angegeben wurde- in der Schweiz hergestellt, wohl eher irgendwo in China oder Osteuropa. Caveat Emptor!

Waxworks - not a real horror classic
This film was bought for my daughter, who's working on her masters degree in film science: A paper on European (especially German) silent horror films compared to Hollywood ones of the same period. This has caused us to view a host of silent horrors: This one is supposed to be "interesting" for silent horror film buffs, but its only benefits are the fine performances of the great German actors, e.g. Jannings, Veidt etc. The plot is very thin, depicting a young poet who gets a commission to write background texts for 3 wax figures (there are actually four of them, but for some obscure reason, only three of the tales are included in the film); Haroun-al-Rashid, Kalif of Baghdad; Ivan the Terrible, Czar of Russia; Jack the Ripper, 19th. century London murderer. He then has three dream sequences of these figures, all including himself and the beautiful daughter of the proprietor of the Wax Cabinet: The two first parts are no real horror stories at all and the third one is very thin, with expressionist sets, copied very closely on "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" and similar German horror films; lots of double exposures etc., but with no real horror feeling. Seen as "horror", we were both rather disappointed with this film; seen as entertainment, it's just about o.k.
