Fantastic nostalgia
The DVDs were in perfect condition. I watched this series almost 20 years ago, and watching it felt like it was yesterday. The distinctive style and fantasy themes contrast with historical reality, but it's even better as a fantastically odd creation than as a paint by numbers exercise. Also, its mix of animation and CGI is an interesting relic of its time. In that regard, this series is more than the history of the world - it's a fascinating history of animation.
History buffs may find a rich vein of conversation in comparing the historical life of Alexander and his successors to the series, so long as they're ready for some weird twists and some unbelievable and unexpected character and set design.
