Alternative Ebook Reader
Originally released in 2001 and you can find examples still going strong - how many of today's Kindles will still be usable in 10 year's time? This is an earlier model Clie. It's very similar to the SL10 which followed it, except that this has an aluminum body, not plastic, and a rechargeable battery (replaceable, if you can find one), rather than AAAs. It feels solid and well-built - nice to hold. As the other reviews say, it makes an excellent, pocketable ebook reader. There are several free ebook reader programs available for the operating system, Palm OS 4. "Ereader" (formerly 'Peanut Reader') is the one I favour. Another free piece of (desktop/laptop) software, "Calibre", will convert almost any kind of non-DRM ebook to the "Ereader" format. There's also freeware called 'CardTXT' available which will read txt files, like those on gutenberg.org; CardTXT is more of a text editor than a proper ebook reader but it has a full-screen function, and clear fonts. Contemporary reviews tended to criticise the Clie's screen. It is quite reflective so it tends to work best in very bright light or, with its backlight on, in the dark. The backlight is a green glow, like Indiglo watches have - you'll maybe love it or hate it. The screen is way smaller than those of current ebook readers, of course; I use a bold font, otherwise it would be a strain to read. You'll need to find an old, non-PRO Memory Stick if you want to use the Memory Stick slot. These are very rare, and will probably cost you as much as or more than the Clie itself on eBay.

A little different.
This is a quirky camera which maybe falls between two stools. It has very limited manual control, and doesn't shoot RAW, so if you're looking for something more 'pro' you might want to spend more on a different camera. On the other hand, it's not a foolproof point-and-shoot; it needs some fiddling to get it to take good images, so if you're looking for something more 'snapshot', you could be better off spending less. The best explanation of the camera's quirks, and how to work with them, is here - http://kimletkeman.blogspot.com/2009/10/fuji-f70exr-how-to-shoot-it-mkii.html . Notice, for example, how it doesn't shout '10 Megapixels' anywhere on the camera body, as others would. That's maybe because it's more of a '5mp + 5mp' camera; it takes better pictures at its 'Medium' (5mp) setting than at its 'Large' (10mp) one. Good points are its heavy, well-built feel, its 'dynamic range' and that you can bore the pants off people about the "re-arranged colour filter array" in its sensor. Not so good points are less-than-impressive battery life, lack of manual focus and aperture options, and the tendency of the lens to produce 'purple fringing'. So why buy it? If you're on a tight budget and want an interesting, pocketable camera, this is the one.

Different.
This review is of a reconditioned Forge, with the 'Developer's Cut' firmware. The unofficial firmware update fixes some bugs apparently, and also allows the player to use a 4GB SD card, just. It seems to struggle to with 4GB, though, taking a while to integrate new songs, and occasionally putting up "insufficient memory" messages. That is the only flaw I can find in this player. The design is about eight years old now, and certainly looks different to current devices - all chrome and metallic-effect finishes. If you're one of the curmudgeonly anything-but-an-iPod crowd (like me) this is maybe the player for you. Important for an eBay buy is that the player uses one AAA battery; no worries about proprietary and non-removable internal cells. It sounds great; it maybe lacks a little bass, but there's an equaliser you can fiddle with and the right headphones can also add some low-end oomph.
