William Cobbett's words are as relevant today as they were when they were written
A common sense description of rural family life from the time, 200 years ago, when the Industrial Revolution was just beginning. The harsh choices and the loss of their ability to control their own lives seemed to be a government machination then. The Times newspaper states today (15/06/2023) that the period of two decades, during which average wages have remained static, or diminished, has not been experienced since this book, Cottage Economy, was published.
Read this book and it will do you good to realise that decent people have always tried to help and that, when wealthy people exploit the poor, they almost always do that with the connivance of government.
