Lee Hazlewood - These Boots Are Made For Walkin' CD
Encompassing his three late 60's (mainly) solo LP's for MGM - "Lee Hazlewoodism", "The Very Special World of...", and "Something Special"(plus 3 instrumental tracks by his band the Woodchucks), this is a comprehensive and excellent sister piece to his recordings with Nancy Sinatra of the same era, and also will appeal greatly to anyone who likes the excellent new album "Cake or Death".
Hazlewood's gravely baritone drawl is prominent throughout on epic cowboy ballads such as "I Move Around", western movie style themes and several upbeat turns with guest Suzi Jane Holkum. There is a strong humour content throughout which may get on some nerves but works quite well, especially on his own version of Boots, which includes his wry commentary on Nancy Sinatra's version.
Some of the tracks on disc two (Something Special) are plain weird, with very stripped down instrumentation and arranger Billy Strange mumbling over a number of tracks, as well as the excellent lounge instrumentals by the Woodchucks, but personally I loved it.
These are three sought after collectors albums and can cost substantial amounts for the original vinyl on ebay and elsewhere. This is a double CD for a budget price and is well worth the money, although perhaps for first timers to Lee Hazlewood's magic - try his incredible work with Nancy Sinatra first or indeed his production/writing work for Duane Eddy. Lee Hazlewood is a true one off and a musical genius.
