Important History; Account full of humanity
Excellent book. Edge of your seat, even though you can look up the outcome. Representative of the largely untold story of Jews and political rivals of Hitler who had to flee Germany when he became chancellor in 1933. Welcomed to France as anti-fascists in 1933, they were then forced into interment camps as Germans when Hitler threatened war in 1939, to sleep in the straw and perform backbreaking meaningless labor. When the Germans invaded France, these "Enemies of the Third Reich" were sitting ducks--a clause in the Armistice promised that France would hand over any person the Germans wanted--to be hunted, arrested, tortured, thrown into concentration camps, and/or murdered outright. Many committed suicide as Hitler's savages closed in. Those few who escaped did so under the most harrowing of adventures.

Yiddish (and jokes) you won't hear in the classroom
A classic reference and entertaining. I really appreciate the shades of meaning in various words, and especially the real meanings behind literal translations from another time that don't make much sense today. Indispensable!
