Murmur Deluxe delivers punch!
R.E.M.'s best works remain in the 80's. Their debut album Murmur was given the deluxe remaster treatment, and the result is fantastic. The old I.R.S. cds mastered in the 80's leave much to be desired. Murmur now shines as bright as it did the day the band recorded the album. The bass guitar is clear in the mix now, and the drums don't sound flat. The bonus second disc in an entire concert recorded in Toronto in 1983, and is great insight to the live sound of the band in the early days. An early live version of Harborcoat from their next album Reckoning from 1984 turns up in the set. The packaging would have been better if it had included song lyrics as most people, including Mr. Stipe himself have no clue what he's actually singing during most of their 80's I.R.S. output. Fans of this band need to add this release to their collection. If all you know about R.E.M. is their latter day work on Warner Brothers, you need to begin your history lesson right here.

Very lovely album!
I have become a big fan of Jack Tatum in the past year. Great music and love his sound and sensibilities. My wife does too. Music we can agree on.

Es ist Zeit zum Zuhören.
2 of 2 found this helpful ZEIT! is German for "Time." This is a package that deserves a lot of yours. From 1977 - 1979, David Bowie was on the cutting edge, despite the fact he had been a household name since Ziggy Stardust exploded in 1972. His music by 1977 was as un-mainstream as you can get, but his cult following only kept getting bigger and bigger.
Many people were unfairly over critical of this block of albums from Bowie's career at the time they were released. Hindsight has since retracted most of the negativity associated with the albums "LOW", "HEROES", "STAGE" and "LODGER."
A whole genre called New Romantic was spawned from these recordings. A promotional slogan for "HEROES" in 1977 was "There's Old Wave, there's New Wave, and there's David Bowie." The new wave scene of the late early 70's/early 80's owed a huge debt of gratitude to these records.
In this day and age of artist's performing entire classic albums in concert from their back catalogues front to back live, for someone like David Bowie to give this treatment to the "LOW" album 25 years after its release is a testament to how important this album is to him personally. And he's never been one to look back too often throughout his 50 years as a recording artist.
This set is loaded with highlights. Many of his fans' favorite songs are here; Sound & Vision (#3 UK hit), "Heroes", Be My Wife, Beauty and the Beast, Breaking Glass, Fame, Station To Station, Ziggy Stardust, Stay, TVC15, D.J. and Boys Keep Swinging. They sound as great today as they did back then. Don't let the fact there are many instrumental numbers on "LOW", "HEROES" and "STAGE" fool you. Bowie had plenty to say without having to rely on lyrics to get his point across. These albums are worthy of your attention. As they would say in Germany where the majority of this work was created and recorded, "Es ist Zeit zum Zuhören".
